Fund It Friday! September 9th
Luke and I are just recovering from the yearly post-PAX-con-crud. Between our sniffles and sneezes we’ve been taking a peek at what fall Kickstarters are in store for us. We have plenty of games with monsters, nightmares and a bit of epic space. Enjoy!
This micro game is a quick role deduction and bluffing game of monsters and one clever kid. The player who is the kid can lie and the monster roles must tell the truth. In game players are assigned different hidden roles and have different objectives to win. Players take turns asking questions as the kid tries to guess which monster is under the bed and the monsters are trying to find the kid. It is a fun project by a friend and Seattle designer wishing to bring Under My Bed in a pay-what-you-want model. The game and art is done so the risk is minimal and you’ll be supporting a designer doing great things at OneThousand XP. I recommend following this designer and be sure to watch for their upcoming Kickstarter for their game, The Last Garden.
This mint tin sized game is a fun and quick worker placement game. A full game takes just 20 minutes and Mint Works is a great game to introduce new players to a worker placement mechanic without the need for a 2 hour game. Players have few workers in the form of mints and spend these mints at different buildings and structures to gain “plans” the best way to earn victory points. The game goes until 7 plans are built and the player with the most victory points wins. Mint Works has a lot of replayability with its now 14 stretch goals of additional content which added more buildings, cards, modes and AI opponents for solo players to name a few. This mint tin game is going to be packed! Just 4 days left to support–you can back to get the base game for just $10!!
Radiant is an area control game organized where players fight for dominance over the 4 realms of Perim. The fantastical races of Perim have adapted to their unique environment and have advantages in their native plan. Over the course of 3 rounds or ages players will use their hands and drafted cards to construct forces for 1v1 battles across the map. The player who wins each fight, puts a control cube on the board. The player that dominates the different regions will win! Each age, one race becomes “Radiant” and has special abilities/stats associated with this ascension. Manage your forces carefully to ensure your victory!
Face the worst horrors conjured by the human mind in Nightmarium: a monster building card game for 2-5 players. Players are competing to build 5 creatures before other players. Each nightmare creature will consist of legs, torso and a head card. Players can mix and match the cards and perform the variety of abilities of their completed monster or match all the pieces to force opponents to discard pieces of a nightmare. These creatures are on par with the creepiness of the Donnie Darko rabbit—you’ll be surprised to see the horrors you can create in this simple card game!
Players assemble their crew of thieves, pickpockets and other rogue-specialists to perform heists on the richest nobles of this medieval world. This calculating card game for 3-5 players is semi-cooperative game which encourages players to make loose alliances but take advantage of different schemes and actions in their favor when the time is right. There are No Honor Among Thieves after all…plenty of backstabbing in this game to make it a highly competitive and fun game.
Tiki Island is a family-friendly game of destruction and survival on a series of islands. 2-6 players are competing to cross the board (from one large island to the next) without dying. Players will need to build small islands as they cross the ocean to get to their new home, but opponent sabotage, voodoo magic and other obstacles will pop up to hinder you from your main goal. In Tiki Island, players enjoy many beautifully illustrated card options and plenty of replayability crammed into the game box.
Gamelyn Games is back with an epic expansion for Tiny Epic Galaxies that gives players a lot more strategy options and increased immersion without lengthening the gameplay! Beyond the Black includes new gameplay elements like pilots, specialized ship tokens, set collection goals and exploration tokens with resource benefits. I am also digging the new art direction for this sci-fi game: it definitely puts the “EPIC” into the look of these games to go with the innovative gameplay. Of the Tiny Epic series, Galaxies is by far my favorite because of its easy to learn dice rolling mechanics paired with a plethora of strategy choices that make each game feel like a gran accomplishment in just under an hour of play.
I hope you enjoyed this list of tabletop games and products that we are currently obsessing over on Kickstarter. If you have a Kickstarter you think we should cover, please let us know in the comments or contact us on Facebook and Twitter. Please consider supporting or sharing these campaigns with friends to help these games meet their goal. We’ll be back with another Fund It Friday article next week!
